The dedication of Freud’s Civilization and its Discontents reads: “From the Landtier to his great oceanic friend”.
I really like this quote. Here, Freud is referring to Romain Rolland, a French intellectual interested in Hindu mysticism that he exchanged letters with for a number of years. Rolland won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1915, but is also known for describing the “oceanic feeling” which Freud misread but popularized in C/D.
“The sentiment I experience is imposed on me as a fact. It is a contact.”
“subterranean source of religious energy”
“a free vital upsurge”
“prolonged feeling” existing alongside “critical faculties”
